High-risk gamblers are more likely to engage in Internet gambling
This study is the first to examine the relationship between gamblers who are high-risk and Internet gambling. Researchers gathered respondents from a variety of websites which included legal Australian gambling websites and lottery sites online. Overall 4,944 Australian adults aged 18 or older were included in the study. Advertisements on gambling-related websites Facebook ads, and Google AdWords were used to recruit participants. The survey asked questions about demographics such as gender, age location, gender, and general demographic data. Respondents also answered questions about the kind of gambling they engaged in. The overall sample was dominated by men (77.8%) with an average age of 42.
High-risk gamblers who participate in Internet gambling are not at a greater risk of developing problem gambling. While Internet gambling participation is associated with a higher risk of developing problems with gambling but it isn’t an exact indicator of whether an individual is suffering from. In fact, anywhere from one-third to one-half of the problem Internet gamblers attribute their problems to land-based gambling. This suggests that online gambling is a more readily accessible alternative for gamblers who are struggling. More research is required in order to identify high-risk Internet gamblers.
